Laura Peters AFSCME Local 751

Laura Peters has been employed with the Davenport Community Schools for 16 years.

Laura serves as President of AFSCME Local 751, is a negotiator for the Secretarial bargaining unit, Chief Steward of her local, and serves as a District 5 VP for Council 61.

She never hesitates when volunteers are needed. No job is too small or seemingly unimportant. Laura makes calls, writes postcards or knocks doors for issues important to AFSCME members and their families. She never misses an opportunity to educate members or elected officials and works hard to recruit new volunteers.

Thank You Laura! You are a great example of AFSCME at it's best..

Christina Herald with Representative Thede Christina Heald with Representative Thede

Christina Heald is the March Political Volunteer of the Month for AFSCME Iowa Council 61. Christina is an in-home Child Care Provider with Local 1212 and a PEOPLE MVP.  She resides and works in Bettendorf. Christina recently had an in-home Lobby Day with Senator David Hartsuch and newly elected Representative Phyllis Thede who is also an AFSCME member.  Both elected officials spent the majority of the day at the daycare interacting with the children who Christina cares for.  The legislators also learned about the work of a union child care provider. Christina has now signed up to attend AFSCME's Lobby Day on March 11.  She will be the special guest of Representative Thede and will be the first recipient of the 'Quiet Hero' award.  In addition, Christina's home visit was featured in the local paper.

Cyndee Heeren, Local 3011

Cyndee Heeren has been employed for many years at Department of Human Services. She is a long term member of AFSCME and a MVP People member. Cyndee demonstrates the importance of activism in her everyday life. In addition to her many hours as a volunteer for AFSCME endorsed candidates over the years, Cyndee attends her Legislative forums each month and reaches out to her Legislators on issues important to the working families of Iowa. Cyndee "answers AFSCME's call to action" without hesitation. As a proud member of AFSCME, she can always be counted on to make a call, write a letter or attend a political event. Cyndee recognizes the importance of passing Doctor's Choice legislation. She uses every opportunity to educate our members and the public along with working hard to convince elected officials of the importance of passing legislation that gives workers the right to select their own doctor if injured on the job.

Mary Thompson, Local 2997

During the 2008 general election Mary Thompson was invaluable to AFSCME Iowa's efforts, particularly in Eldora where she worked tirelessly for AFSCME endorsed candidates. Mary was a great leader and her efforts were recognized by Ed Conlow, an adviser to Pat Murphy, the Speaker of the Iowa House. Ed says of Mary that he was "inspired by her hard work and positive attitude." Mary recently volunteered to go to Missouri to work on the Home Health Care organizing campaign that is still ongoing.

Shari Duncan, Local 3011

Shari Duncan has been employed with Child Support Recovery in Davenport for 8 years. She joined AFSCME Local 3011 immediately upon hire and is the sitting Vice President. Shari also serves as a Steward and has previously held the offices of recording secretary and treasurer. Local 3011 President, Tom Carnahan, nominates Shari Duncan and says "Shari Duncan is a vital part of Local 3011. She represents our Local with pride. Shari can always be counted on. She volunteered countless hours for AFSCME endorsed candidates during the 2006 and 2008 election cycles. Shari believes in AFSCME and has worked hard to organize membership in AFSCME and PEOPLE. In addition, Shari took the lead on Local 3011's charity to Davenport's Senior Citizens Angel Tree.She purchases the gifts so our Seniors are not forgotten at Christmas."

Alberta Conrad, Local 2987

Alberta Conrad is Vice President of Local 2987. Alberta has worked for MHI for over 20 years. She is one of the first employees to join Local 2987 and is a MVP member of PEOPLE. In addition to her dedication to AFSCME, Alberta also is the Chair of Buchanan County Democrats. Local 2987 President Curt Salow nominates Alberta Conrad and says, "Alberta can always be counted on to help. She volunteers numerous hours a week for AFSCME endorsed candidates and accepts any job with enthusiasm. Alberta Conrad is AFSCME at it's best!"

Jim Payton, Local 2985

Jim Payton has been an AFSCME member and a correctional officer at Oakdale for 28 years. He and his wife Sheryl have 2 daughters and Jim has had the entire family out working, plus friends of the family, for AFSCME endorsed candidates. Jim has worked tirelessly in Cedar Rapids to make sure we send friends of AFSCME to the Statehouse and the White House

Ramona Norman, Local 3450

Ramona has volunteered for the past 20 years for political events and fundraisers. This election Ramona has assisted Council 61 with their extensive postcard and mail program as well as phone calls. On election day Ramona volunteered in the Council 61 office in Des Moines, helping to keep our get-out-the-vote operations moving smoothly. After the election, Ramona will return to family projects with her children and grand children.

Donna Webb, CCPT

Donna Webb has run Early Bird Childcare in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for eight years. She is licensed to take care of twelve children. She cares for children for workers on all shifts and also on Saturdays. Donna joined AFSCME Iowa to help make a difference as a child care provider in Iowa. She understands that being a union member is more than just paying dues. We are the only folks who can elect our bosses. Donna feels that we need to elect officials that support our issues. Donna is working very hard on this election to get that job done.

Paula Martinez, Local 3013

Paula has been active in AFSCME for many years and currently serves as President of AFSCME Local 3013 and Chair of the Women’s Committee of AFSCME Iowa. Paula has worked on political campaigns in both Polk and Warren Counties and has contributed hundreds of hours to political candidates who stand up for working families.

Mike McCarthy, Retiree

Mike has served as an Executive Board member and officer for Local 3450. He is active in the membership contact program by making sure AFSCME members vote and have access to candidate information by serving as a Capitol Complex leaflet Coordinator for many election cycles.

Tom Carnahan, Local 3011

AFSCME member Tom Carnahan is employed as an Unemployment Fraud Investigator with Iowa Workforce Development. Tom has been an AFSCME member for 11 years. He is the current President and Chief Steward of Local 3011. Tom understands the importance of electing officials who support issues important to working families; in this effort, Tom volunteers countless hours for AFSCME endorsed candidates. In 2007 he ran for City Council in Davenport. Tom also serves on The Commission on the Status of Women and was recently elected as a Commissioner for Great River Bend Transit Authority.

Della Mull, CCPT

Della believes in AFSCME and can always be counted on to answer the call to volunteer. She knows the issues and has an easy way of talking to people; because of her knowledge, people respond positively to her. Staff Rep. Tom Anthony door knocked with Della recently and writes, "I had the opportunity to door knock with Della last Saturday in Anamosa. Della was great to work with. I was really impressed with her organizing skills and her ability to get out our message. She knew the town and the people. After a few hours we were hot and tired but working with Della made the day productive and fun."
